You may consider a military storage unit if you're looking for a safe and secure place to store your belongings as an armed forces member. This type of storage offers many options, including 24/7 security, climate control, and fire protection. Here are some of the top reasons to choose a military storage solution for your storage needs.

Reasons You Need Storage While in the Military

In the military, you know that storage is helpful and sometimes essential. Here are a few reasons why:

Military deployment

When you are in the military, deploying to a location far away from your home is always possible. Deployments can be complicated because you must leave all your belongings behind. Fortunately, military storage options can help you keep your belongings safe while you are away.

Military deployment can be stressful, and worrying about your belongings only adds stress. This storage option can give you peace of mind knowing that your belongings are safe and sound.

Storage options are also great for storing things you may not need immediately but still want to keep, such as seasonal clothing or holiday decorations. This way, you can declutter your living space and make it more comfortable when you return home.

PCS move

You may need storage if you are in the military and have to move due to a PCS (Permanent Change of Station).

Military families have to move an average of every 2-3 years, making it challenging as you accumulate a lot of belongings. Storage is an excellent solution for military personnel who need a place to keep their belongings while moving.

With no long-term commitment, military self-storage can provide the perfect solution for storing belongings during a PCS move or deployment.

There are many other benefits of military self-storage as well. Units are typically available in a wide range of sizes, so you can find one that fits your needs. And most facilities offer military discounts to active duty and retired service members.

So if you're looking for a flexible, affordable solution for your storage needs, look no further than military self-storage.

Range of military storage unit sizes

You may have to move around a lot in the military. Frequent moves can make finding a place to store your belongings challenging. However, self-storage solutions come in various sizes, so you can find one that fits your needs.

Smaller units are great for storing items you don't regularly need, such as seasonal clothing or holiday decorations. You can choose a larger unit if you have more oversized items, like furniture. And if you need to store sensitive materials, like medical records or financial documents, climate-controlled units are available.

The wide range of sizes benefits military self-storage because it allows you to find a unit that fits your needs.

Moving Tips for Military Families

As military families are well aware, moving can be a part of life. While exploring a new place can be exciting, it can also be stressful.

Here are a few moving ideas to help make the transition smoother for everyone involved.

  • Start by decluttering your home. Decluttering will not only make packing more straightforward, but it will also help you save on storage costs.
  • Make sure to pack essential items separately from everything else. This way, you'll have what you need right away and won't have to rummage through boxes in search of specific items.
  • Utilize self-storage, if possible, as a great way to keep your belongings safe and out of the way while you're settling into your new home.
  • Give yourself plenty of time to plan and prepare for the move.

Military Storage Tips

If you are in the military or have a family member who is, you know that storage can be a challenge. Here are some suggestions to help you make the most of your space.

  • Have a plan. Decide what you need to store and where it will go. Just as in the field, having a plan will help you make the most of your space and avoid clutter.
  • Use storage containers. Invest in good-quality storage containers to protect your belongings from dust, moisture, and pests.
  • Label everything. Labeling will help you find things quickly and keep track of what is where.
  • Keep it clean. Regular cleaning will help organize your storage area and prevent mold and mildew from growing.

Check for pests regularly.

Remember Your Rights and Reasonable Expectations

When military families move, there are certain things they should expect from their storage unit facility, and in particular situations, they may be protected by Federal laws.

Here are three things you should expect from your facility:

  • Military families have the right to a safe and secure storage facility.
  • Military families have the right to have their belongings stored for a reasonable period of time.
  • Military families have the right to receive compensation if their belongings are damaged or lost while in storage.

How does the SCRA affect your storage?

When active duty military members enter into storage contracts, they could receive protections under the Service members Civil Relief Act (SCRA). This federal law provides certain protections for service members in particular situations, including a limit on how much storage companies can charge for late fees.

Under the SCRA conditions, storage companies are only allowed to charge up to 6% annually on any unpaid balances owed by service members. So, if you have a balance of $100 that you haven't paid in 3 months, the most the storage company can charge you is $1.80 in late fees ($0.60 per month).

In addition, the SCRA has, in particular circumstances, guidelines regarding the storage company's ability to auction off service members' units who are behind on their payments. This protection applies to self-storage units and those part of a moving company's services.

It is wise to familiarize yourself with the details to see if you qualify under SCRA for protection and benefits.

5 Things You Didn’t Know About Storage Unit Auctions

Are you interested in buying at storage unit auctions in Wichita, Kansas? This guide listed 5 things you probably didn't know about them. Read on.

When most people think about storage unit auctions, they think about the popular television show Storage Wars. While this show is entertaining, it can also be misleading. Storage unit auctions are not like the scenes in the show. There is no excitement or fighting over items. The reality is that it is a lot like a garage sale. There are many misconceptions about auctions at storage facilities. Below are some things you may not know: What is a Storage Unit Auction Storage unit auctions are a recent trend in the United States, and they're exactly what they sound like: an auction of storage units. The storage units are opened, and the bidders can look at everything that's inside before placing a bid. Individuals or businesses who have failed to pay their rent or abandoned their possessions will often have the contents sold at auction. Most storage auctions are handled by a third-party company. This company does the auction, takes payment for the units, and handles all of the paperwork for you. Why Are Belongings Left Abandoned? There are a few possible reasons why items are often left abandoned. Some are as follows: The tenant never bothered to move their belongings out, even after the rental agreement expired. The tenant may have passed away, and their family never claimed the belongings. The tenant may have simply abandoned the unit and moved on without their possessions. Whatever the reason, it's not uncommon to find abandoned storage units littered with old furniture, boxes, and other random items. What Can You Find in Storage Auctions Storage auctions are a great place to find a variety of items at a low price. The most common type of item you will find at an auction in a storage facility is furniture, but you can also find appliances, tools, and other household items. Note though that not everything you find here is valuable. People often attend these kinds of auctions because they are looking for a good deal on items. However, it is important to remember that not everything in the unit being auctioned will be worth buying. In fact, most of the time there will be very few valuable items in the unit. It is important to really take the time to look at the items before making a bid. Moreover, it's also important to remember that you can't always trust what you see. In fact, you must always remember the inherent risk of bidding at an auction. There are simply many things that you can be unaware of - from hidden damage to missing parts - that you cannot always trust what you see. So before you go bidding on that locker full of "treasures," take a moment to consider the risks involved and whether or not it's really worth taking the chance. Know Your Storage Auction Rules There are no specific rules or guidelines in an auction, and things can quickly get out of control if you do not know what you are doing. Make sure you know what you are doing when you attend an auction. Always seek to clarify the rules of the event and if you have questions or uncertainties, never be afraid to seek help. It is open to the public Auctions are open to the public so that anyone can bid on the units. However, be aware that you may not get the best deal possible if you're not familiar with how the bidding process works. The best way to maximize your chances of getting a good deal is to attend an auction or two and watch how the process works. This will give you a better understanding of when to bid and how much to bid. Keep in mind that most units are auctioned off in bulk, so don't expect to get a lot of high-end items for cheap prices. But if you're looking for some good deals on basic household items, storage auctions are definitely worth checking out. It often takes place on weekends Weekends are when most people have free time to attend. The units are usually auctioned off in the order that they were rented, so the earliest units to be rented are usually auctioned first. The auctions usually last for a few hours, and there is a lot of bidding for the best units. Sometimes people will even start bidding before the auction begins in order to get a good unit. People often get very excited at auctions because there is the potential to find some great treasures. You do not need to be present to win You can still win an auction without being there. Yet, there are a few things that you will need to do in order to participate in an auction without being there. First, you will need to find a reputable auction company. Next, you will need to register for the auction and provide a method of payment. Finally, you will need to make sure that you have read and understood the terms and conditions of the auction. Once you have taken care of these things, you can relax and wait for the results of the auction. You have to be prepared to make a quick decision When you go to an auction, there is a minimum bid that you have to put in if you want to participate in the auction. However, at some auctions, there is no minimum bid, so you can bid as little as you want. This can be helpful if you're looking for a bargain or if you're not sure how much something is worth. It also means that someone could potentially win an auction with a very low bid, so it's important to know what you're bidding on and be prepared to pay what the item is worth. When you go to an auction, the bidding typically starts at 50% of the total. This is referred to as the opening price. Keep in mind that this is just the starting point, and the price can go up from there. In order to get an idea of what the final price might be, you need to take into account how much inventory is being auctioned off. If there are a lot of items for sale, then the price will likely go up. Conversely, if there are not many items being auctioned off, then the price could potentially go down. The bidding increments at an auction are typically $5 or $10. This means that when someone bids, the next bid must be at least $5 higher than the previous bid or $10 higher than the previous bid. This system keeps the bidding going and prevents people from just bidding a dollar amount and walking away with the unit. It also ensures that people are serious about buying the unit. It can be unpredictable Storage auctions can be unpredictable. For example, one person might bid on a unit with the intention of finding valuable items to sell, while another person might bid on the same unit with the intention of finding furniture or other household items they can use in their home. This means that the final price of a storage unit can vary drastically depending on who is bidding and how much they are willing to pay. This is all part of the fun! You've Won Your Storage Unit, Now What? The highest bidder wins the unit and many times is responsible for paying all of the fees, including the auctioneer's commission and any storage charges that have accrued since the unit was last paid for. In addition, bidders are typically required to put down a deposit in order to participate in an auction, which is often refundable if they do not win the property. Finally, it's important to be aware of the closing costs, which can include transfer taxes, title insurance, and other fees. Final Thoughts If you wish to know more about storage auctions, don't hesitate to contact South Rock Storage, a reliable storage facility in Wichita, KS. At South Rock Storage, auctions may be hosted once a month if there are units that have been abandoned.

12 Storage Ideas to Maximize Your Space

Save money and maximize the space you have with these 12 brilliant self storage ideas. Make the most out of your unit while keeping costs low.

Self-storage can be a lifesaver when you're short on space. But did you know you can save even more money by following a few simple tips? Here are 12 self-storage ideas to help you make the most of your unit and keep costs low. How to Maximize Your Small Space 1. Declutter frequently. Decluttering is one of the best ways to help you keep control of your stuff. Try to eliminate things that haven't been used for six months, broken items, and things that don't make you happy anymore or take up space in your storage unit. Facebook Marketplace is an excellent resource for connecting with others who may be interested in your unwanted items. And since you can list items for sale at any time, it's a convenient way to declutter your home and make some extra cash. 2. Store seasonal items in a separate location. Seasonal items are a great candidate for a storage unit. Clothing, shoes, and accessories can easily be stored in your self-storage unit when you're not wearing them. Holiday decorations can also be stored in a separate space—just make sure it's somewhere that won't get too hot or humid! You don't want to ruin all your fun decorations by storing them in an area with poor ventilation. We highly recommend storing these items in a climate-controlled storage unit. Patio Furniture is another seasonal item that can be kept out of the way in a self-storage unit until you need it again. 3. Install furniture with built-in storage. There are several ways to maximize your space when it comes to furniture. For example, you can buy furniture with built-in storage. They have compartments that you can use for storing items or even a full-on drawer system. Plenty of online stores sell these types of pieces, so you can find something that suits your taste and requirements and the rest of your home decorating scheme. Another great idea is to buy furniture with multiple functions (i.e., it serves many purposes). For example, an ottoman could serve as an extra seat when needed but slide open to reveal an additional compartment where items can be stored securely inside. Another option would be buying a bench with drawers underneath for extra storage space; this will add some additional seating into the mix and give you somewhere safe to hide away all those random items floating around your house! 4. Invest in stackable furniture and closet organizers. Invest in stackable furniture. If you have a lot of stuff you'd like to store, but don't have the space for it, consider investing in some stackable furniture. These pieces are designed to be stacked on top of one another and can help save room by eliminating the need for additional shelves or drawers. Use closet organizers to keep things tidy. Another great way to maximize space is by getting creative with clothes hangers with closet organizers hanging from hooks on walls or rods within closets. Some even feature pockets where you can tuck your shoes away after using them, so they don't get in the way when hanging items from their hangers! 5. Add shelves or cabinets around the perimeter of your rooms. Here's a step-by-step guide to doing this: Measure the walls at their highest and lowest points, and then draw a triangle on the wall where your shelves will go. Cut along the lines, leaving enough room for all of your items (not too much space!). Install shelving according to instructions on its packaging, or consult with a professional if you're unsure how to do so safely before installation. Place items on shelves until they reach eye level from across most rooms—you want them hidden but still accessible! 6. Add under-bed storage bins. If your storage area has enough height, consider adding under-bed storage bins so you can store clothes, footwear, and linen. These are especially useful if you need to clear out some space during the off-season or when you're moving items around in preparation for a move. The benefit of these is that they're super easy to access—roll them out from underneath the bed frame. Clear plastic bins are best because they'll let light through and make it easier for you to see what's inside at a glance. Also, consider using them to store non-clothing items like toys or books that may have accumulated over time—you don't have room for all those things in your bedroom closet! 7. Buy or build a shoe rack or organizer. If you have a lot of shoes, consider building or buying a shoe rack or organizer. This can keep your shoes off the floor and in a visible location. Shoe racks are great for keeping shoes out of the way and in a protected environment. You can also store them in rooms that are temperature controlled, such as your basement or bedroom closet. Remember that moisture is not suitable for leather or suede material because it will rot over time. Therefore, avoid storing these types of shoes near any source of moisture (such as windows). 8. Make a space for your sports equipment outside. If you don't have room to store bikes or sports equipment inside, make a space for them outside. Keep your bike out of the rain. You can keep bicycles above ground level by hanging them on hooks (one every few feet) so they don't fall over. If you have a garage or carport, this is easy: hang the bike with its tires off the ground and leave it there until you need it again. Otherwise, place a cover over your bicycle when not in use to protect it from weather damage and dust accumulation. Lock up your bikes securely if possible—a chain, cable, or U-lock should work well. 9. Create a command center to organize mail, keys, and other small items. You may want to designate a specific area in your home for mail, keys, and other small items. A corkboard can be used for reminders and hooks for keys. A basket can be used for small items like pens, markers, or even more mail. Use a file box for bills and papers that need additional attention. Finally, use a small table or decorative box to house all the supplies needed to keep everything organized! 10. Find areas around your home for extra storage. If you have extra storage space above your door, you may want to consider adding shelves there. Stair risers are a great place to store books. You can also use the back of doors for hanging things, such as a shoe organizer or hangers. You can also find storage under the bed and behind cabinets if you're looking for more places to store items in your home. 11. Add dividers in deep drawers or cubby holes. You can also create dividers to help with organization in deep drawers. For example, if you have a drawer that is 10 inches deep but only contains two items, then it might be best to divide them into two sections. This way, one side can hold your scissors and tape dispenser, and the other can store pens, pencils, and other writing utensils. In addition to using shelving for storage solutions around the home (see #5), you may also want to consider getting some drawer organizers. These types of organizing systems come with dividers that keep contents organized while they sit in their designated space inside a cabinet or closet shelf. Some common uses include: Using shallow drawers as "junk drawers" where you place things like batteries that need easy access and aren't used often Use shallow drawers for things like silverware sets, so they don't get lost at the bottom of cabinets when stacked on top of each other. 12. Use self-storage for overflow items. If you have a lot of space at home but not enough money to get rid of it all at once, consider storing some valuables or furniture instead of throwing them out or donating them—you may be able to use them again someday! Self-storage is a great place to store those extra items you don't need around the house. Things like seasonal decorations, extra blankets, and electronic items you rarely use (like a VHS player) but want to keep can all be stored in self-storage while leaving room in your home for things you're using. If you're looking for places where you'll be able to access these things irregularly, consider renting a storage unit for a time that makes sense for your needs. For example: if there's an item that requires fairly frequent access (like camping gear), it probably isn't worth paying each month just so that it's available now and then. If you also have a hobby that requires storage space (like scrapbooking), consider using a self-storage unit to keep your materials organized and tidy. The benefits of renting a self-storage unit in Wichita, Kansas are as follows: You can declutter your home and free up space. You can keep your belongings safe and secure. You can have easy access to your things when you need them. It is a cost-effective way to store your items. Final Thoughts When it comes to organization, there are endless possibilities for tiny homes. With some creativity and elbow grease, you can turn your compact home into an organized oasis.
