So what factors should you consider when choosing a storage unit?

There are many reasons why people might need to rent a self-storage unit. Perhaps they are moving and need to store their belongings while they find a new home, or they are going through a renovation and need to keep their furniture and other possessions safe and out of the way. Maybe they are starting a small business and need to store extra stock or office supplies. Regardless, self-storage units provide an affordable, convenient solution for short-term or long-term storage needs.

However, when renting a self-storage unit, there are a few things to consider to ensure the process goes smoothly.

Top 5 Things to Keep in Mind When Choosing a Storage Unit to Rent

Size and Capacity: What Self-Storage Unit Size Do I Need?

When choosing a size unit, you must first consider the storage space you need. The general rule of thumb is to select a size that will accommodate your current needs and allow for future growth. If you are unsure what size unit you need, our experts can help you choose the right one.

South Rock Storage offers storage units in various configurations and sizes. We're confident that with these options, we can meet all your self-storage needs:

5'x10'

A 5'x10' size is perfect for storing smaller furniture, boxes, and other household items. The unit has a total storage capacity of 50 square feet, so think along the lines of a walk-in closet.

10'x10'

A 10'x10' self-storage unit offers 100 square feet and can hold the equivalent of an average-sized bedroom. This is an excellent option if you're looking for a place to store furniture, clothes, boxes, or other smaller items.

10'x15'

A 10'x15' unit offers up to 150 square feet of storage. It's comparable to a small apartment and can accommodate furniture, smaller appliances, and other items.

10'x20'

A 10'x20' self-storage unit can hold up to 200 square feet of belongings. This unit is the equivalent of a small one-car garage and can hold furniture, larger appliances, boxes, and other items. It can also be a good option for storing certain cars, boats, and other vehicles.

10'x30'

A 10'x30' storage unit can hold up to 300 square feet of belongings. It's perfect for larger appliances, boxes, or a vehicle such as a car or even some boats and RVs! This is the equivalent of an oversized one-car garage.

Regarding capacity, you should consider a few factors when choosing the right unit size as they will determine how much space you can use.

  • Length
  • Width
  • Height

When determining the storage capacity of a self-storage unit, it's important to remember that you can stack everything and make full use of the height.

Location: What's the Best Location for Me?

When it comes time to choose a self-storage unit, location is an essential factor to consider. Generally, we advise people to look for storage options close to their home or workplace; this way, you have fast and easy access to your items when needed.

Think about how often you'll need to access your belongings. If you plan on accessing them frequently, choosing a unit that's located close by is essential. If you aren't accessing them as often, you could consider a facility further away from Wichita. While it may come with a lower price tag, don't forget it will be more hassle, mileage, and gas to access your belongings.

Price: How Much Will It Cost?

You want to find an affordable unit that fits your budget. A variety of factors can affect the price of a self-storage unit, such as the size of the unit, the location of the facility, and whether our unit is climate controlled or non-climate controlled.

Before you decide on a self-storage unit, it is important to compare prices and find the best deal. However, some providers of self-storage units in Wichita, Kansas like South Rock Storage do not provide pricing options on their websites. Be sure to contact them directly and inquire about their pricing information. Moreover, be sure to ask about any discounts or specials we may have (such as for military members).

It is also essential to consider your needs when choosing a unit. If you only need storage for a short time, then mention this to our South Rock Storage representative because we may be able to offer a cheaper solution than if you need long-term storage.

Security: What Kind of Security Features Are Available?

Security should be one of your top considerations when looking for a self-storage unit. You want to ensure that your belongings are safe and secure while in storage. Look into finding a facility with security cameras and a lockable door. Make sure that the facility is well-lit and gated at all times.

Climate Controlled: Should I Be Choosing a Storage Unit That's Climate Controlled?

Climate control is an important consideration when choosing a self-storage unit. The temperature and humidity in the unit should be consistent and within a safe range for your belongings. Temperature fluctuations can cause damage to some properties. Humidity can lead to mold and mildew growth. Both are unpleasant, and both can be dangerous. If you are storing sensitive items, ask our representative about South Rock Storage's climate-controlled options.

Sorry, You Can't Live in a Storage Unit...and Other Prohibited Items

You can't live in a storage unit as it differs from an apartment. Here's also a list of common prohibited items in storage units.

No, you can't live in a storage unit. This is probably the most common rule, and for a good reason. Self-storage is a great way to store your belongings and essential moving supplies when you don't have the space. It is not meant for human habitation. That's just one of the many items prohibited by most self-storage providers. While each facility has its own list of prohibited items to protect its clients' safety and security, some general rules apply to all. Hence, when selecting a facility, it is crucial to be aware of the list of commonly prohibited items, which may be a deal breaker for some people. This article will discuss commonly prohibited and limited things at a storage facility. Why You Can't Live in a Storage UnitSome people think they can live in a storage unit, but this is not the case. You cannot live in one mainly because they are not designed for residential purposes. There is no running water, no kitchen, and no bathroom. While some people may try to make it work, it is not ideal. These facilities are typically designed for long and short-term storage, meaning people will store their belongings for a while. Such an environment is not conducive for living, as you need a place where you can stay with acceptable living conditions.Additionally, these facilities are often closed off from the public, meaning that you would not have access to the same amenities that you would if you were living in a traditional apartment complex, home, or other legal housing option. You can't live in a storage unit. Same with your petsMany self-storage providers do not allow pets, and those that do allow pets have restrictions on the size and type of pet that can be stored.Pets are prohibited for a variety of reasons. The most common reason is that pets can damage property. They can scratch or bite the furniture, walls, and doors in the storage unit.Pets can also track in mud and dirt, damaging the storage unit's flooring. Some facilities also have rules against leaving food out and attracting pests like rats and cockroaches. Some facilities are in shared residential areas, and landlords do not want tenants with pets because they may cause noise or odor issues.Things to Avoid for Self StorageBelow are some items people mistakenly believe they can store in a self-storage unit. While some places, including South Rock, allow for the storage of some of these items, there may be restrictions.Hazardous MaterialsSelf-storage providers prohibit dangerous materials to protect their customers, employees, and the general public. Self-storage units are not designed to store hazardous materials like gasoline, oil, or pesticides. They are a closed environment, which can be dangerous if hazardous materials are present. For example, if a fire started in a storage unit with hazardous materials, the smoke from the fire could be toxic, and everyone in the vicinity could be harmed. Many facilities are located near residential neighborhoods, so it is essential to keep any potential dangers away from these areas.ChemicalsSome types of chemicals can damage the contents of a storage unit, and in some cases, it isn't even possible to store them. This includes bleach, gasoline, and other flammable or poisonous liquids.Chemicals are prohibited because they can corrode and damage the property stored in the facility.Chemicals can also be harmful to people and cause respiratory problems. To protect the safety of their tenants, facilities prohibit the storage of many chemicals.PerishablesSelf-storage is not the best place to store perishable items like food, beverages, and flowers. These items can become spoiled in a very short time, and the unit may never be able to be rented out again. There are a few reasons why most facilities prohibit perishables. The first reason is that it's challenging to keep track of what's in each unit when food items are present. The second reason is that food can attract insects and rodents and infest the entire facility. Many facilities have rules against storing perishable and unpackaged food to keep their units clean and pest-free.Batteries and Electrical ItemsIf you're looking for a safe place to store your belongings, a non-climate-controlled facility is not the place for batteries or electrical items. Some facilities don't allow these items due to their fire hazards. Not only could a battery start a fire, but it can also release harmful fumes that can be dangerous to both you and the other tenants in the facility.Battery-operated devices like video game systems, computers, tablets, and cell phones can also create a fire hazard. If one of these items were to malfunction or become damaged, it could quickly start a fire. Because of this fire hazard, many electronics and battery-operated devices should be stored in climate-controlled units, no matter their size.AppliancesSome units may allow the storage of appliances such as stoves, microwaves, and refrigerators. However, all appliances must be checked with the facility to ensure they are safe to store. In general, most facilities have restrictions or rules on appliances because they can create a fire hazard. Some appliances contain oil or gas that can easily ignite, leading to a dangerous fire. Many appliances take up a lot of space and can be challenging to move, which can cause problems for other tenants in the storage facility. Some appliances can also damage the property in the storage unit. Aside from cases where appliances have caused fires in these facilities, there is also the potential for water damage if a refrigerator leaks or a washing machine overflows.Illegal Weapons and SubstancesThe reasoning behind this rule is simple: self-storage businesses are a public place, and as such, illegal weapons and drugs cannot be stored on their property. In addition, by prohibiting these items, the facilities can help protect their customers and employees from potential harm. While it may be inconvenient to leave illegal weapons or substances at home, it is essential to remember that the safety of everyone involved is at stake. So if you're looking for somewhere to store your belongings, make sure you check the list of prohibited items first.Types of Self-Storage UnitsThere are many different types to choose from. You can rent storage space by the month or year, and there are many different sizes of units to choose from. The most common type is a traditional self-storage unit, a room or garage-sized unit you can rent by the month. These units are typically climate controlled, meaning they are kept at a steady temperature and humidity level to protect your belongings.Other popular types include:Vehicle StorageVehicle storage can be a great solution when you need to free up your garage or driveway space. Self-storage facilities offer indoor and outdoor parking spaces perfect for storing cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats, RVs, and other vehicles. You can typically rent a space by the month or year, and many facilities offer discounts for longer-term rentals. When choosing a self-storage facility for vehicle storage, be sure to ask about security features like locked gates and security cameras. You'll also want to ensure the facility is well-lit and has easy access so you can get to your car when needed. If you're looking for a climate-controlled environment, be sure to ask about the temperature and humidity levels in the facility's parking spaces.Vehicle storage can be a great way to keep your car safe and secure while freeing up space in your home or garage.Climate-controlled storage unitsThese units may be smaller than some of the larger traditional self-storage units available, but they offer all the benefits of climate control. They're perfect for storing documents, furniture, or any other items that need to be kept in a controlled environment.Final ThoughtsWhile storage units can be a convenient and affordable option for short-term storage, they are not suitable for long-term living. The lack of privacy, space, and amenities can make living in a storage unit uncomfortable and impractical. How Much Fits Into a 5x10 Storage Unit?

This guide gives you some tips on how to maximize the space in your 5x10 storage unit. You'll also learn what is best suited for this size storage unit.

A 5x10 storage unit can hold a significant amount of items. Typically, this is enough space to store the contents of a one-bedroom apartment, including furniture, appliances, and boxes of personal belongings. Some people use their 5x10 storage units to store seasonal items, like holiday decorations and winter clothing. Others use them as extra space for their businesses, storing inventory, office supplies, and marketing materials. A 5x10 storage unit can probably accommodate whatever you need to keep. Please scroll down to see our guide on what fits into this storage unit size for maximum efficiency. Why is a 5x10 storage unit a popular size? For several reasons, a 5x10 storage unit is a popular size for many students and residents of small apartments in Wichita, Kansas. 5x10 storage units are perfect for one-bedroom apartments or small homes (like student housing). You can usually fit everything from a one-bedroom apartment into this size—including furniture, appliances, and boxes of personal belongings. Many people have extra furniture or items that just won't fit in their current space. These units are perfect for storing those items until you have room in your home to bring them inside. If you have a large enough vehicle to transport them to your storage unit, you can put some larger pieces of furniture inside the unit and store them until you need them. These storage units are great if you need to keep things safe from harm or the elements (like rain and extreme temperatures). Many storage facilities in Wichita, KS, like South Rock Storage, offer climate-controlled units, which is something to consider if you're storing items sensitive to temperature changes. If you live in an area with extreme temperatures, you know how important it is to protect your belongings from the heat, cold, humidity, and other weather conditions. Climate-controlled storage units are kept at a consistent temperature and humidity level, so you can rest assured that your things will be safe from the elements. Students who need extra space when they go off to college or university can also use these units because they won't be able to take all their belongings with them. Instead of leaving essential papers around where anyone could find them (and potentially steal), students will want somewhere safe where no one else has access except for themselves—especially when living away from home for extended periods! They're also great for people looking to move out soon but don't have a place lined up. Let's say you've decided to move out of the basement and into your place. Moving out is exciting, but it can also be a stressful time. You might not have found a new home yet, or you may be looking for something in another city where it's hard to travel back and forth between locations. If this sounds like you, then renting a 5x10 storage unit may solve one of your problems. When you rent a 5x10 storage unit, all your belongings will be in one convenient place until you find somewhere else to live—and this is much cheaper than paying movers every time you need to move something from your old house or apartment! 5x10 storage units are great for people who are just starting to move out on their own. They're also great for people looking to move out soon but don't have a place lined up. Businesses also often choose this size for storing excess inventory and office equipment. If you own a small business, you know that space is often limited. You might not have the room to keep all of your inventory on-site, or you might need to free up some space in your office for new equipment. In either case, a 5x10 storage unit can help! You can use a 5x10 storage unit to store excess inventory, seasonal items, marketing materials, and more. This way, you'll have more room in your office or storefront and won't have to worry about your things getting damaged or stolen. 5x10 Storage Unit Guide A 5x10 storage unit is perfect for storing a few pieces of furniture or several boxes. Here is a guide on how much you can fit into a 5x10 storage unit. Furniture: Depending on the size of your furniture, you can fit 1-2 bedrooms' worth of furniture into a 5x10 storage unit. This includes a bed, dresser, nightstand, and lamp. Boxes: You can fit approximately 20-30 medium-sized boxes into a 5x10 storage unit. This is an excellent option for storing seasonal items or non-essentials. Miscellaneous Items: If you have more oversized items that don't fit into boxes, a 5x10 storage unit is a great option.
