Storage 101: The 5 Kinds of Self Storage

Storage units at South Rock Storage

Self-storage is a great way to store your belongings when you don't have a lot of space. But with so many different types of self-storage, it can be hard to know which one is right for you. We're here to help.

This article will discuss the five most common types of self-storage and help you decide which one is right for you based on your specific needs.

What Are the Different Types of Self-Storage?

1. Traditional self-storage

Traditional self-storage is the most common storage solution available today and the method we specialize in here at South Rock Storage! This method involves renting a storage unit from a company that specializes in self-storage and provides a variety of sizes to meet your needs.

The first step in using traditional self-storage is to select the correct size unit for your needs. Units vary in size, so we must first determine what you need to store. For example, a smaller unit would likely suffice if you are looking to store documents and books. At the same time, more oversized items like furniture or machinery may require a much larger unit.

Overall, traditional self-storage is an affordable, convenient option for storing all kinds of items safely and securely.

2. Portable self-storage

Portable self-storage is a convenient and flexible solution for those who need to store extra belongings. Unlike traditional self-storage, you don't have to rent a space at a storage facility. Instead, the storage company will deliver a container to your home or business. You'll have a certain amount of time to fill it up, and then they'll pick it up and store it for you.

Portable self-storage can be a great option if you're moving houses or renovating your home, as you'll have more control over when and where your belongings are stored. And because the container is delivered directly to you, it's easier to load than if you were renting a space at a storage facility. The downside is that accessing your stored items is not as easy as with traditional self-storage.

Portable self-storage could be the perfect option if you're looking for a flexible and convenient storage solution.

3. Climate-controlled self-storage

Climate-controlled self-storage is a type of storage typically kept at a constant temperature and humidity level to protect your belongings from damage caused by extreme temperatures. This type of storage is a good option for storing sensitive items, such as electronics or furniture.

Climate-controlled self-storage units are often located indoors, where they are less likely to be exposed to extreme temperatures. In addition, climate-controlled units often have additional features, such as air filters and dehumidifiers, to further protect your belongings.

If you live in an area with extreme weather conditions like Wichita, Kansas, or if you want to be extra cautious, climate-controlled self-storage may be the best option.

4. Vehicle self-storage

When you need to store a vehicle for an extended period, your best option is a vehicle self-storage facility. These facilities are designed to keep cars, boats, RVs, and other vehicles. They are typically located inside a warehouse or large parking lot, which provides added security and protection for your vehicle.

Vehicle self-storage facilities also typically have security cameras and gate access control to further deter crime. In addition, many facilities offer climate-controlled storage units to protect your vehicle from extreme weather conditions.

When choosing a vehicle self-storage facility, select one that offers the security and protection features you require.

5. Mini-warehouse storage

Mini-warehouse storage is an excellent option for businesses that need more space to store inventory or equipment. Unlike traditional self-storage units, which are typically much smaller, mini-warehouses offer a large amount of space for storing more oversized items and large quantities of supplies.

Additionally, these storage facilities often provide additional amenities, such as climate control and security features, which are ideal for businesses with valuable inventory.

Ultimately, mini-warehouse storage is a flexible and convenient solution for businesses that need more space while still having the peace of mind that their belongings are adequately protected.

Which Type of Self-Storage Is Right for You?

Now that you know the different types of self-storage, you may be wondering which one is right for you. Ultimately, the type of self-storage you choose will depend on your specific needs and budget.

If you're looking for traditional self-storage, consider the size of your belongings and whether climate control is necessary. Climate-controlled self-storage may be the best option if you have sensitive items or are storing a vehicle.

On the other hand, if you need a lot of space to store inventory or equipment, mini-warehouse storage may be the right choice.

Whatever type of self-storage you choose, research your options and compare the different facilities carefully. Proper research will help ensure that you find a facility that meets all your needs and provides the best value for your money.

There are many factors to consider when choosing a self storage facility. Here's how to find one that's right for you and your situation.

Whether you're downsizing your home or need a place to store extra belongings, finding the best self-storage facility in Wichita, KS, can be tricky. With so many options available, how do you know which one is right for you? Here are some tips to help you choose the proper storage unit facility for your needs. What Is a Self-Storage Facility? A self-storage facility is a popular option for people (or businesses) who need extra storage space. These facilities allow you to rent a unit for a set time, usually month-to-month. Self-storage units come in various sizes, so you can choose one that's just right for your needs. Also, most facilities offer climate-controlled units, which help to protect your belongings from the elements. Choosing a clean, well-lit, well-reviewed facility with security measures in place is essential. What Are the Different Types of Self-Storage Facilities? There are several different types of self-storage facilities, including: Mini storage These facilities typically have smaller units that are perfect for storing a few items. Mini storage units are often less expensive than other types of storage units. Full-service storage These facilities offer a wide range of storage options, making them perfect for storing a few items (like the contents of a bedroom) and more oversized items (like the contents of an entire home). Full-service storage facilities offer additional services, such as packing and moving assistance. Vehicle, RV, and Boat storage These facilities offer secure storage for your car, RV, or boat. Vehicle storage units are typically larger than other storage units and may be more expensive. Climate-controlled storage This type of facility offers temperature and humidity-controlled units, which helps protect your belongings from damage. Climate-controlled storage units are popular for storing electronics, furniture, and other items sensitive to the environment. The Benefits of Using a Self-Storage Facility There are several benefits to using a self-storage unit in Wichita, KS, including: Peace of mind Knowing that your belongings are stored safely and securely can give you peace of mind. Self-storage units are typically more secure than keeping your belongings in your home. Convenience Self-storage facilities are typically open 24 hours a day, making it convenient for you to access your belongings when needed. They're also usually located near major highways, making them easy to find. Flexibility Most self-storage facilities offer month-to-month leases, so you're not stuck with a long-term commitment. This gives you great flexibility as you store your belongings. What to Consider Before Choosing a Facility Now that you know what a self-storage facility is and the available different types, how do you choose the perfect one for your needs? Here are a few tips: Your needs What do you need to store? How much space do you need? Do you need climate control? Answering these questions will help you narrow down your options. You can also ask friends or family for recommendations. Price Once you know what you need, compare the prices of different self-storage facilities. The right self-storage facility can save you lots of money, so check out the offers and ask for a free quote before making your final decision. Self-storage facilities charge by the month, so be sure to factor that into your budget. However, some facilities do not disclose pricing information online, so contact them directly. Location When looking for a self-storage facility, finding one conveniently near you is essential. This will make it easy to access your belongings when you need them. Size When it comes to self-storage, size does matter. Renting a unit that is too small will not give you the storage space you need and could end up costing you more in the long run. The best scenario is that you have a large enough unit for all your items with a little extra space. Here are a few things to keep in mind when deciding on the size of your self-storage unit: How much stuff do you need to store? What type of stuff do you need to store? How often do you plan to access your belongings? If you are unsure which size unit is right for you, most self-storage facilities offer free consultations with staff members who can help you determine which size best suits your needs. Security You want to know they're secure when you're storing your belongings. Ensure the facility has adequate security measures, such as 24-hour surveillance and gated access. Reviews Once you've narrowed down your options, take the time to read reviews of each facility. This will help you get a better idea of each facility's quality. You can also ask the facility for references. Climate control feature Climate control is an important feature to consider when renting a storage unit in Wichita, KS. The feature helps to regulate the temperature and protect belongings from weather-related damage. Climate control is not as important in climates where it is warm year-round. However, climate control is a must-have feature in areas like Wichita, where temperature can change drastically. Customer service You should feel comfortable with the staff at your chosen facility. Be sure to ask about their policies and procedures to get a better idea of their customer service level. Choosing the best self-storage facility doesn't have to be complicated. By considering your needs and comparing prices, you can find the right storage unit facility for your belongings. And don't forget to read reviews and ask for references to get a better idea of the quality of the facility. RV Storage: a Guide for Self-Storage

As you make your RV storage plan, this guide will help protect your investment and get you quickly back on the road next season.

If you're like most RVers, you can't wait to hit the open road as soon as the weather starts to warm up. But before you head out on your next adventure, properly preparing your RV for storage is essential. With some planning, you can help ensure that your RV is in top condition when you're ready to hit the road again. South Rock Storage offers the following tips for preparing your RV for storage. Please note that these are our recommendations. Do your research, and consult your owner's manual for specific instructions. Clean your RV One of the most important things to do before storing your RV is to give it a thorough cleaning. This will help remove any dirt, dust, or debris that could cause problems while your RV is in storage. Start by cleaning the exterior of your RV using a mild soap and a soft brush. We also recommend washing (and waxing) the exterior to protect the paint job. Then move on to the interior, paying particular attention to any areas where food is prepared or stored. Be sure to empty all cabinets and closets so that any food or other perishables don't go wrong. Once everything is cleaned out, give your RV a good wash and wax to help protect the exterior from the elements. Once you're finished, open all the cabinets and doors to help air circulate throughout the RV. Check your tires Check your RV's tires before storing them for an extended time. If possible, keep your RV on level ground to help prevent flat spots from developing on the tires. Also, if you'll be storing your RV for more than a few months, consider removing the tires and keeping them indoors. This will help protect them from weather damage and extend their life. Check your fluids All the fluids in your RV, including the engine oil, antifreeze, and propane, should be at proper levels one or two days before storing your RV. This will help keep the engine in good condition while it's not in use. Be sure to consult your owner's manual for specific instructions on how to check the fluids in your RV. Additionally, it's a good idea to fill up the gas tank (using a gas stabilizer) to prevent any moisture or breakdown of the gasoline while the RV is in storage. Then, we recommend driving the RV for a bit after changing the oil to give the new oil a chance to circulate correctly. You should also run the engine for a few minutes every few weeks while your RV is in storage to help keep the engine in good working condition. Cover your RV If you'll be storing your RV outdoors, investing in a quality cover is a good idea. Be sure to choose a cover specifically designed for RVs and large enough to cover your entire rig. This will help protect your RV from the elements and keep it clean while it is being stored. Disconnect the batteries If you'll be storing your RV for more than a few weeks, it's a good idea to disconnect the batteries. This will help prevent them from losing their charge while your RV is in storage. If possible, store the batteries in a cool, dry place. Repair damages before storage Ensure all necessary repairs are taken care of before storing your RV. For example, if you know your RV's tires are worn, go ahead and get new ones to put on before you store them for the winter. This will help avoid long wait times in spring and ensure that you can get back on track as soon as possible. The same goes for any other maintenance items such as oil changes or filter replacements. This will give you peace of mind during the off-season and help ensure your RV is in top condition when you're ready to hit the road again. Double check your owner's manual Be sure to consult your RV's owner's manual for specific instructions on preparing your rig for storage. Each type of RV has unique needs, so it's essential to follow the manufacturer's recommendations to help avoid any problems down the road. Choose the best storage facility When storing an RV, choosing the best storage facility is essential. RVs are a valuable investment, and you want to ensure that your investment is well protected. The best storage facilities for RVs offer several features that help to keep your RV in top condition. These features include security cameras and gated access. Security cameras help to deter criminals, while gated access helps to keep out trespassers. By choosing a storage facility that offers these features, you can help to ensure that your RV is well protected.
